Activated charcoal filter

On the strength of their high adsorption capacity, activated charcoal filters are used widely for cleaning gases and liquids.

In water treatment, they are used to eliminate dissolved substances such as chlorinated hydrocarbons that are not retained by the other treatment steps (flocculation, sand filtration). The efficiency of activated charcoal filters is monitored with photometric absorption measurement at ultraviolet wavelengths (254 nm), because most of the organic substances occurring in the raw water exhibit strong absorption at this wavelength.
