10 VisGuard & 52 FireGuard for refurbishment Cityring Lucerne


One of the busiest highways in Switzerland is the A2 around Lucerne. This highway is part of the direct North-South link from Germany to Italy. As an average, more than 85’000 vehicles per day are using the stretch between Emmen and Kriens. After more than 30 years of extensive use, a viaduct in the North, the 600 meter long tunnel “Reussport”, a bridge connecting the city of Lucerne and the 1.5 kilometre long tunnel “Sonnenberg” in the South are refurbished between 2009 and 2013. During the refurbishment, the existing old KTN instruments for the ventilation control will be replaced by 10 VisGuard extractive systems. They will be installed by the company ACP. In addition, both tunnels will be upgraded with early fire detection systems according to the recommendations of the Swiss Road Authorities ASTRA. There will be altogether 52 FireGuard instruments installed by the company Siemens. More information is found on www.cityring.ch (in German only)
FireGuard
The FireGuard measures the scattered light intensity in tunnels with scattering angle, measuring range, response threshold and signal processing being optimized for smoke and fire detection. Air sample is fed through the measuring cell without the use of a fan, effectively preventing from window soiling. Calibration is performed in E/m and can be checked easily with a calibration rod.

VisGuard Extractive
The VisGuard measures the scattered light intensity of a sample drawn into the instrument. Filtered purge air is fed through the flow cell, thus enveloping the sample in a protective shroud of clean air. This effectively keeps the optics clean. Installations are either in the tunnel cavity/niches (in-situ) respectively using extractive sampling away from the cavity. An optional sample heater eliminates the influence of any mist effects.
